Explaining Gaps in Your Resume During the Interview and Hiring Process

It’s tough to make it through your career without a gap or two in your professional history. From economic downturns to family obligations, there are a variety of valid reasons why a person with a good work ethic could be out of work for a few weeks, months, or even years.

But, hiring managers may worry about patterns of absences and how they could affect your work in the future, so during your next interview, take a few minutes to reassure them that you are ready to work again.

Unemployment.

Job loss can happen to any of us, and sometimes it takes a little while to get back on your feet. Explain to the interviewer how you tried to find new work and what you did with your time off.

You want them to know that you are diligent and self-motivated, and not think that you spent your time sleeping in and keeping up with daytime television.

Explain the situation clearly but briefly. You don’t need to share a ton of personal details. Just give them the core facts and answer any follow-up questions.

Family.

Family obligations can take a toll on your career. Whether you left the workforce for a few years to stay home with small children or needed to care for a sick relative, be honest about it with the interviewer.

Gaps in employment happen, and a good hiring manager will realize it.

Health.

Out of work because of your health? You don’t owe a detailed explanation of your health history and shouldn’t offer one. Let the interviewer know that you are fully recovered and ready to work.

Education or Entrepreneurship.

If you went back to school or decided to try your hand at your own business, tell the interviewer what you learned and how it applies to the job you are seeking. Career detours that demonstrate that you are interested in learning new things and developing your skills can be an asset.

When an interviewer questions an employment gap, all they want to know is that you’re ready to work now and are not likely to miss more time. Explain your absence briefly; let them know you are prepared to get back to work and move on with the conversation.
