Are You Unproductive Because You are Unorganized?

Do you often find yourself feeling lost or overwhelmed by you at work?

Do you have to move paperwork or forget where you stored an important file?

How long do you think you can keep up at the job while being so unorganized?

You have a problem. And it’s something that many people struggle with daily at work. Being unorganized happens for a number of reasons. Sometimes it’s from having way too much on your plate. Other times it comes from not having a way to control the clutter that just builds up over time.

You may be saying to yourself, “Some people work well with a mess on their desk”.

However, it’s time to create an organization system that will enable you to be more effective at work and be much more productive.

Identify Your Work Style

Everyone has a unique work style. For some, it is writing everything down on sticky notes because they like to be surrounded by visual stimuli. For others, it’s being minimal and storing things away in folders. Take a moment to think about your work style and what helps you to be most productive.

  • You may be a combination of being a visual person and keeping things in your head.
  • You may like to handle tasks right away or you may like to procrastinate a little.
  • You may work well under pressure or you may hate deadlines.

All of these factors add up to the way that you will begin organizing your test and items on your desk.

Create A Better System

Luckily, there are a lot of great ways to organize your daily tasks and your workspace. If you are a visual person, you will probably enjoy an organizational system that allows you to keep your most important items out in the open. For example, you may want to create a series of desktop files on your computer that open up when you log on in the morning. Or, you may want to keep a clipboard on your desk that includes the most pressing tasks and a written to-do list. At the very least, start thinking about ways to control any cluttered areas on your desk. You could use baskets or stacking boxes to hold office supplies, paperwork, forms, and other items you need close by.

Tap Into Technology Tools

A great way to start getting organized and become more productive is to start utilizing the technology that you have right in front of you. Most workplaces include access to a centralized calendar system — for example Microsoft Outlook. Create a calendar that lists all of your tasks and deadlines for projects, then set up team calendars for collaborative projects. Break tasks up for larger projects.

You may also want to control the clutter in your email program by setting up inbox folders for each person or department so that you are not overwhelmed with hundreds of emails to scroll through every day. Upload your files to a cloud server each day instead of keeping printed copies of things all over your desk. Use an electronic note taking system for creating to do list and maintaining project, a good one to use is Evernote.
